NATIONAL CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMME BIOSTRATEG

The National Centre for Research and Development informed about the approval by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the strategic programme for scientific research and development works: "Environment, agriculture and forestry"- BIOSTRATEG, which was prepared by the Council of NCRD.

The scope of the programme includes five strategic problem areas, resulting directly from the National Research Programme, consistent with the objectives of the research carried out in the EU as well as in the world. These strategic areas are:

  • Food security;
  • Rational management of natural resources with particular emphasis on water management;
  • Prevention and adaptation to climate change, with particular emphasis on agriculture;
  • Biodiversity protection and sustainable development of agricultural production space;
  • Forestry and wood industry.

The main objective of the programme is the development of knowledge in the defined programme areas, leading to increase the international position of the Polish research and development works in this field, and transfer the developed socio-economic innovative solutions to industry. The Programme will stimulate the growth of innovation and competitiveness of the Polish economy. The total budget of the Programme, will be about PLN 500 million. Currently, the National Centre for Research and Development is carrying out the activities leading to the implementation of the Programme. All information will be published on the NCRD website.

We encourage you to review the description of the Programme:

HORIZON 2020
BIO-BASED INDUSTRY

The Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI) is a new public-private partnership established between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium. BBI announced the first call for proposals in the area of the bio-based industries. BBI operates within the Horizon 2020 Programme. The total amount of allocated funds for its implementation will reach 3.7 billion €. The contribiution of EU will be 975 million €, while 2.7 billion € will come from private investments.

The competition focuses on research topics in the area of the agri-food and forestry sector. It can be noticed, that BBI has put a great emphasis on the issues related to the use of so far unused wastes from agricultural industry, the development of methods of reducing the greenhouse gas emission and water pollution arising from the production process and also finding new ways to use cellulose, which can reduce the use of energy and raw materials. The detailed description and information on the financing can be found on the Commission's website.

The deadline for applications is 15 October 2014. The proposals can be submitted in one of 16 research topics, which are:

  • BBI.VC1.R1: Efficient pre-treatment of lignocellulosic feedstock to advanced bio-based chemicals and biomaterials
  • BBI.VC2.R2: New sustainable pulping technologies
  • BBI.VC2.R3: New products from sustainable cellulose pulp exploitation
  • BBI.VC3.R6: Fermentation processes to obtain biosurfactants and specialty carbohydrates from agricultural and agro-industrial streams
  • BBI.VC3.R7: Protein products from plant residues
  • BBI.VC3.R8: Bioactive compounds from meso-organism's bioconversion
  • BBI.VC4.R9: Valuable products from heterogeneous biowaste streams
  • BBI.VC4.R10: Nutrient recovery from biobased waste streams and residues
  • BBI.VC1.D1: Lignocellulosic residues to (di)carboxylic acids, diols and polyols
  • BBI.VC1.D2: Chemical building blocks and value-added materials through integrated processing of wood
  • BBI.VC2.D3: Advanced products from lignin and cellulose streams of the pulp and paper industry
  • BBI.VC3.D4: Functional additives from residues from the agro-food industry
  • BBI.VC4.D5: Cost efficient manure valorisation on large scale
  • BBI.VC3.F1: Added value products from underutilised agricultural resources
  • BBI.VC2.R4: Fibres and polymers from lignin
  • BBI.VC2.R5: Sugars from effluents of the pulping process and discharged fibres
